MD380 firmware reverse engineered

Postby RupertG6HVY » Wed Jan 20, 2016 9:45 pm

Haven't read the full documentation yet, but it looks as if the MD-380 firmware has been completely reverse engineered and brand-new software built for it Could turn it into one of the most exciting digital open platforms out there... at least until the manufacturers learn how to lock it down properly. Buy now, while stocks last?

Saw this today on a facebook post, have got the link open to have a good read through in a bit. Could be an interesting way of doing various digital formats, especially after the CS radio never really did materialise.

Now we just need a dual band radio that can do it and all our dreams will have come true :D

Just a quick note to add that I have moved this topic, we now have a section for the MD-380 With experimental firmware so any topics etc now have a home :)

The development of this started with a hardware mod to put the MPU into bootloader mode. Presumably it is known how to recover the firmware if bricked, notwithstanding soft pots.
The patched firmware is applied using the factory flash tool so it should presumably be relatively safe

I was thinking more of bricking by Pilot Error :(

So I got myself another md-380 whilst the going was good and I thought I would stick the 'v2' experimental firmware onto it. Managed to do it
but not seen many menu difference etc., apparently the required scan mode is automatically on with the V2.

I've uploaded a duplicate codeplug onto the new radio which works fine with my original 380 i.e. I can hear all radio traffic that I have
the correct radio id's entered in. My question is, for the scan mode / all talk groups / all ID's to work properly, on the new radio, must I now change the group lists for each channel back to none or does it not make a difference whether I have some ID's in but not all i.e. will all of them now come through regardless?

Ahh, ignore me. I've answered my own question. It turns out that all ID/TGs will come through irrespective.
