Retevis RT8 or TYT MD380 - around £100 and plenty of accessories - it's a good entry level radio which is a decent size and light weight.
Baofeng UV-5R , Motorola DM4600 , TYT MD-9600 , TYT MD-UV380 , Anytone AT-D868UV , Retevis RT8 , DV Mega (Pi-Star) , Inrico T320
Local repeaters GB7CT , GB7WL , GB7HR , GB7NS , GB7GF and GB7BK

Agree with 2e0ucw, the TYT MD380 and Retevis RT8 or RT3 are a great starting point with access to both DMR and Analogue on 70cms. You will need access to a PC for adding the code plug to the radio so if you can opt for a programming cable as part of a bundle.

If you are buying from any auction site, please make sure the radio works on the band you require i.e. most repeaters are on UHF but a few are on VHF, Use a seller based in the UK and pay with Paypal. I have found it is easier dealing with UK sellers as you will not be paying VAT and handling charges when importing. Repeater details are here https://www.ukrepeater.net/dmr.htm if you need to check.

Should you not have coverage at home you can buy a dongle that will get you access via the internet try the Helitron DV4mini USB Stick and others if required.

If you need anything please post here,

Ian

Here's a link to the Phoenix network information - Repeater list : http://www.dmr-uk.net/index.php/listing/ , Talk Group List : http://www.dmr-uk.net/index.php/layout/ and links to other networks : http://www.dmr-uk.net/index.php/networks/

As for hotspots and based on personal experience , do not buy a DV4 Mini as most need a lot of tweaking to get decent audio. I'd suggest a DV Mega product - either the dual band unit (http://www.dvmega.co.uk/DV%20Radio%20Hotspot.html) or the Bluestack (http://www.blue-stack.co.uk/Blue-Stack%20Node.html). These are virtually plug and play - use the BlueDV software (http://www.pa7lim.nl/bluedv/) which is available on Linux, Windows, iOS and Andriod. Add a few settings and it's all good to go - you can link to BrandMeister and Phoenix (via DMR Plus - see the hotspot menu on the dmr-uk.net website).
