Decent Speaker Mic for the MD 380.

Postby m0gsx » Tue Sep 06, 2016 5:11 pm

Wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction - looking for a speaker Mic for the MD 380 - there's lots out there - some good and some bad - wonder if anyone has any experience with a good mic - only heard reports that some can make the audio a little tinny. Would appreciate your expertise.

Buying external mikes can be a bit of a gamble on DMR radios. Many have poor RF screening which is a big problem as the pulsing TDMA signal can be heard in the audio. Many others have poor frequency response which can make the DMR audio very muffled.

The Kenwood KMC-21 is reported to be a good microphone that works well on the MD380. But like all these accessories there are a lot of fakes about so even the part number is no guarantee of success.

You either buy a cheap one and hope it works (but expect to be disappointed) or you pay a bit more and buy from a dealer who can confirm it works well with the MD380.

I have had nothing less than complete success using the Kenwood 2-pin 6 conductor speaker/mics with this radio.
Another good set is the PowerWerx brand of Speaker/mic that is available for use with the Wouxun Radios. Again, not a bit
of a problem with them.

There is a company out there selling a Military style telephone style handset for the radio, particularly for the Bao Feng branded radios.
Please, avoid this one as it seems to only work with the Bao Feng radios.
